Student-industry interface today

VISAKHAPATNAM: Visakhapatnam Information Technology Association (VITA) and Hyderabad Software Export Association will be hosting a JKC (Jawahar Knowledge Centre) students' convention meet here at Kalavani Auditorium on Saturday. The meet is being held in association with Institute of Electronic Governance (IEG), Jawahar Knowledge Centre (JKC) and Rajiv Udyogasri.

Briefing the press here on Friday, the Director of Academic Affairs, IEG, Mr. Chandrashekar said that the meet is being held to help students understand the needs of the industry. "It is going to be a student-industry interface. The idea is to make the students understand the needs of the industry," said he.

He pointed out that the university curriculum does not include the skills that the industry looks for and that was the reason why JKC was initiated. "Today apart from the academic performance, the industry looks for candidates with good soft skills."

The JKC concept was started by the AP government four years ago with 17 colleges in its fold. Today, there are over 1,000 colleges with the JKC set up. The initial year saw a churn out of about 1,000 students under this scheme and last year it was over 85,000. The employability has also improved from 8 out of 100 to 22 out of the same number.

Over 1,500 students are expected to attend the session, which will be addressed by professionals from companies like Infosys, Wipro, Satyam, Symbiosys and Xinthe Technologies.

While the Chairman of APSCHE (Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education) K.C. Reddy will deliver the keynote address, the CEO of IEG A. Amarnath Reddy will moderate the session. A host of dignitaries including the V-C of AU B. Satyanarayana, V-C of JNTU- Kakinada Allam Appa Rao and District Collector Sanjay Kumar are expected to attend the meet.

'Decline in IT exports temporary'

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Indian IT Sector is not totally dependent on foreign market and that's a reassuring factor for our students seeking careers in IT and ITES, said the Chairman of Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education K.C. Reddy.

At a Jawahar Knowledge Centres (JKC) Students' Meet organised jointly by the Hyderabad Software Exporters Association (HYSEA) and Vizag Information Technology Association (VITA) in association with the Institute of Electronic Governance (IEG) and JKC and Rajiv Udyogsri here on Saturday, he said that though the slowdown in the global economy and the US stock market has had an impact on the Indian IT sector the reduction in the dependence on global market by our IT companies has greatly helped us.

Mr. Reddy told the students that they shouldn't be unduly worried by the decline in IT exports.

India continued to be the leader in IT and BPO sector and contributes to 28 per cent share to the global talent pool in these two sectors. He reminded them that today India’s economy was driven more by the service sector than agriculture.

The services sector includes: retail management, hospitality, tourism and many other areas and they require the services of IT professionals. This would create tremendous job potential.

He said that India has the advantage of developing quality urban infrastructure. Local bodies should address the challenge of urban infrastructure.

He felt there would be colossal waste of human resources if it took two to three hours to reach the place of work. The greatest advantage for India was its demographic divide. Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (Kakinada) Allam Appa Rao described IT as "India’s Talent" and said there was no dearth of talent or opportunities for Indian IT students. He recalled that during the 2003-04 ".com" burst many predicted it as the end of IT but again there was a boom in the IT sector after a couple of years.

VITA president Bulusu Muralimanohara Rao said that there were both challenges and opportunities in the IT sector.

He felt that the right aptitude was important for a successful career.

Regional Information Technology Officer Raja Bangari, CEO of Symbiosis Technologies O. Naresh Kumar, B. Krishna Murthy of HYSEA, IEG representatives Amarnath Reddy and M. Chandrasekhar were among those who spoke.

'JKCs getting more jobs for AP students'

Visakhapatnam, Sept. 21 Nearly a thousand Jawahar Knowledge Centres in Andhra Pradesh, set up by the Institute of Electronic Governance of the Government of Andhra Pradesh, are dramatically improving the job prospects of engineering students and others, especially those from a rural background, according to Dr M. Chandra Sekhar, Director (Academic Affairs) of the institute.

At a press meet here on Friday, he said the JKC concept was being implemented in the State for the past three years, as it was found that students from rural areas, even though they had the academic knowledge, were found wanting by the industry in the other respects. "So we have been training students in personality development and imparting them the necessary soft skills and also the ability to converse in English fluently. The training has dramatically improved their job prospects. Previously, only eight to nine per cent of the rural students (engineering graduates) were getting good jobs in the industry. Now the percentage has gone up to 24," he said.

He said the other States were emulating Andhra Pradesh as they too were facing the same problem. "As the IT industry moves to the tier-two cities such as Vizag, the problem gets more pronounced. The students need a little additional help, which is provided at the JKCs," he added.

Mr B. Murali Manohar Rao, President of the Vizag Information Technology Association, said Visakhapatnam, with Rs 400 crore of software exports, is attracting many MNCs and IT is bound to take off in the city in coming years," he said.
